Kasia Kay Kindness 2021 Bronze mixed media 76cm

Duration of the Exhibition: 24/09 - 29/09, 2021

Opening times and by appointment: Daily from 5-9 pm.

SNEHTA is happy to announce a new body of work by Polish American artist Kasia Kay who has been an artist in residence since early September.

The exhibition will showcase Kay’s sculptural and mixed media works inspired by her three-year-long stay in Athens during the years 1998-200 and her return to the city now to pursue a solo residency at SNEHTA.

Through her works in the exhibition the artist reflects on her life cycle that connects the past years and the present time.

Often in her artwork Kay dives into introspection, her personal life journey inspired by everyday ritualistic objects such as universal “prayer beads.”

Such objects become personal allegories and material epigrams of the circle of life. The use of the string of beads (κομπολόι), and closed circles are perennial expressions of the notion of equilibrium and flow.

Stemming from a deeper impression of the Attican landscape the artist has returned to commemorate her previous venture by creating a new one.

Exquisite Corpse Now, Curated by Kasia Kay.

*Same dates and times apply as above.

“Exquisite Corpse Now” is inspired by the games Cadavre Exquis and Exquisite Corpse which were popular in the Parisian artistic circles during the 1920’s. Kay decided to reappropriate the Surrealist game by inviting a selection of international contemporary artists to craft new works based on the game’s true essence imbued by concepts of the ‘Absurd’ and the ‘Accidental’.

Considering the current social conditions imposed by the pandemic the game adopted a new meaning as a distant means of artistic collaboration.

Participating artists were asked to reflect on either the ‘new normal’ that they conceive of now or on their hopeful and positive vision of the future.

Initially, the curator assigned three initial artists to be the ‘leading players’ who in their turn invited further contributors into the project.

Drawn in three parts: The first artist would start with the head of a fantastic creature then conceal the drawing by folding the paper, the second artist would draw the torso beginning at the end of the contour of the first drawing then conceal their part, then the third artist will finish the drawing with the legs.

Lastly, the paper gets unfolded, and a hybrid, absurd creature comes to light.

The works reveal our inner need for expression through pastiche and drawing, mediums that poignantly reflect collective imagery ‘Weltgeist’ as a form of visual commentary.

*Visitors are invited to make their own ‘Exquisite Corpse’ upon their visit to the space. Drawing material will be provided at the exhibition venue.

Kasia Kay “Fleeting Memories” από το Snehta Residency
