α του Platforms

Das Unbehagen in Der Kultur),

The name of this show Sublime and Repress, taken from the work of
Sigmund Freud “Civilization and its Discontents” (Das Unbehagen in
Der Kultur), has work as a theme for this exhibition sorting for the artist to
use as a inspiration in the process of selected work for the exertion
exhibition.
Sigmund Freud’ book was published in 1929. In this work Freud explores
the clash between the desire for individuality and the expectations of
society.  In the book Freud enumerates
what he sees as the fundamental tension between civilisation and the
individual. The primary conflict, he asserts, comes from the individual´s quest
for instinctive freedom and civilisation’s contrary demand for conformity.

The installation reflects our social structures. Limits are set to
freedom and individualism in order to preserve systems. Each microcosm is its
own small system and thus part of the whole. The installative work tries to
thematize and visualize this.

Doldrums” is a
two channel video installation of animated projections on a reflective surface, sending light refractions across the gallery
and onto the viewer’s body. These
refractions cast caustic imagery across the
gallery floor and walls, undulating like the watery imagery. An animation of the moon above a calm ocean
contrasts with a stereoscopic wireframe of
the video viewable in 3D. ‘Doldrums’ contemplates the transmission of information through light.
